Atleast 13 people have been confirmed dead on Thursday following fatal accident on Masaka – Mbarara highway at 7am.
The nasty accident happened following a head on collision involving a commuter taxi and a trailer, police has said.
According to eye witness, an unidentified overspending bus was overtaking a trailer in a wrong way and that is when the trailer, with Tanzanian registration number TH77 BVW / T433 BDY Mercedes Benz collided with a Toyota Hiace registration number UBE 995C that was coming from Sembabule-Matete to Kampala.
According to Uganda Police 13 people died on spot that included 5 females, 2 male juveniles and 7 male adults. However, Red Cross Uganda had earlier tweeted that it was 14 that had died on spot.
In a meanwhile, most of the deceased had not been identified besides only a one 36 year old Galambe Francis, resident of Buyoga village Kayunga Matete Sub County, Sembabule District. None of the others had any identification documents on them.
The bodies of the victims have been conveyed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for Post mortem examination.
The wreckage of the vehicles has been taken to Masaka Central Police Station pending inspection by the Inspectorate of vehicles.
Police urges all road users to take cognizant of existing road safety measures.
