‘The tourist’ actress and film-maker Angelina Jolie recently had a low profile stay with our neighbors in Kenya to celebrate the World refugee day that took place in late June.
The UNHCR special Envoy had some time at the International Peace Support Training Centre in Nairobi with refugee girls.
She touched on the dangers that girls and young women face when they flee their homes unaccompanied or split from their parents and guardians following reports that girls from various countries such as Somalia, DRC, South Sudan, Burundi and Rwanda had all experienced sexual violence resulting to some of them being mothers at a very young age.
The 42-year old actress and mother of six said that the role of sexual violence is compounded when it is carried out by someone in uniform who has taken an oath to protect.
So it is a responsibility of those who wear uniform to take the lead now by correcting from within, setting an example stepping forward with new commitments.
