Back in the days, sports and women did not go hand in hand but today, a lot of women are taking carriers in Sports most amazingly in not only Netball that is meant to be for ladies, but also in Men-branded sports like football, Rugby, basketball among others.
Meet Nkumba Lady Marine’s Basket Ball Ace Brenda Ekon, one of those Ladies that have felt a belief of an age of women in a sport discipline.
She is a 21 year single lady though thinking of how to get into a relationship, third born from a family of 6 children playing for Nkumba Lady Marines, a top Flight Female Basketball team in Uganda’s top flight National Basketball League (NBL).
She started her playing career while in Form three at Nabumali High School, Mbale district before joining St. Mary’s Kitende where she scooped a championship at National level and the East African games in 2013. From Kitende, she joined Nkumba Lady Marines where Ladies Basketball fans have nicknamed her the ‘Speed Merchant’.
To Ekon, playing basketball when you are a lady needs too much commitment which most Ladies do not have at the time. She has a dream of playing for the National team, the Gazelles.
Brenda is now pursuing Bachelors in Social Works and Social Administration, third year at Nkumba University. Her so far favourite Song is Am still here by Juliana Kanyomozi. Her favorite dish is Matooke and Pork while her favorite movie is Forever Young.
