City Oilers defends African Zone 5 Club Trophy

Uganda’s National Basketball League defending champions, City Oilers, have defended their regional club basketball championship after beating Rwanda’s Patriots in the finals of the African Zone 5 Club Basketball tournament at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium.

This is a back to back win of the annual tournament as they also capped last year’s in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The Oilers edged a slight win over the patriots in the opening quarter by 22-20, a moment that left fans’ hearts skip a bit

before Coach Mandy Juruni’s boys quickly stretcing the lead to double-figures in the explosive second quarter inspired by great astonishing dunks from American star, Jordin Mayes to make it 48-38 towards the end of the second quarter.

With a lead of 69 – 51 after the three quarters, it was all clear that Oilers were going to be crowned champions again as the patriots stars like Kami Kabange, Hamza Ruhezamihigo and Olivier Shyaka were struggling to find the basket.

And by the fourth quarter, great balling skills from University of Arizona former baller who was also voted as the tournament Most Valuable Player, left no chance to Patriots but to deny them the championship.
