FUFA Women's Independence Cup: Kawempe Lady's Tracy Jones in action

Women Football action returned on Tuesday this week, 9th October 2018 however this time not with the usual FUFA Women Elite League or FUFA Women Cup. It was the Women’s Independence Cup that saw off three female football teams from different categories of Clubs, Secondary Schools and Primary U14 getting a page in the FUFA record books as champions at Kazo Grounds.

Clubs Category

UCU Lady Cardinals (5) 0-0 (4) Kawempe Muslim Ladies

Mukono based Uganda Christian University (UCU) Lady Cardinals emerged as the winners of FUFA Women’s Independence Cup in the clubs category following a victory over Kawempe Ladies that was decided by spot kicks.

The match ended goalless but the winner had to be decided and this is where UCU managed to defeat the all time Women Elite League champions by 5 – 4. This followed goalkeeper Ruth Aturo saving her former teammate, Nakabugo Mariam’s spot kick to hand her side the first ever Independence trophy.

This is their second trophy this year after the Women’s Cup that they won earlier. Aturo Ruth (GK), Nakate Cissy, Nabugolobi Mercy, Apon Faith, Nakirijja Annet, Kwagala Joan, Nakiridde Cathy, Kinavudori Maureen (Captain), Nakasi Jacky, Nassuna Hasfa, Nabaggala Jaharah featured for UCU Lady Cardinals in the finals.

On the other hand, Adeke Juliet (GK), Naziz Florence, Nabulya Rehema, Adubango Rehema, Nakabugo Mariam (Captain) , Akiror Tracy, Nalukenge Juliet, Nakibuka Aisha, Nakacwa Samali, Naddunga Sharon,. Namatta Anita featured for Kawempe Muslim Ladies.

Secondary Schools Category

Kawempe Muslim 1-0 Pride College Mpigi

In the senior schools category, Kawempe Muslim continued to dominate other schools as they defeated Pride College Mpigi with the only goal in the game scored by Nakato Rebecca, just nine minutes after the return of halftime.

Primary Category:

Jolly Primary School 3-0 Bembe Hill Primary School

In the Primary Under 14 category, Jolly Primary school emerged as the winners after thumping Bembe Hill Primary school by 3 – 0. Young stars Nanyonjo Jarida, Tamale Hanisha and Nagadya Jovena scored for Jolly primary School.

Prizes for the winners;

  • UCU Lady Cardinals received a prize money of UGX. 700,000 and a trophy.
  • Kawempe Muslim SSS bagged UGX. 500,000 plus a trophy.

Other Awards

Top Scorer: UCU Lady Cardinals forward Hasfa Nassuna won the top scorer gong after netting six goals in the tournament.
