Tragedy hit revellers who had come for the new year celebrations at Freedom City Mall in Namasuba, Kampala following the death 9 in a stampede.
Police has so far confirmed nine deaths that mainly include juveniles.
It is alleged that the incident occurred at midnight when the event’s MC encouraged attendees to go outside and watch the fireworks display. After the display ended, a stampede ensued, resulting in the instant deaths of five people and injuries to several others.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene and transported the injured individuals to the hospital, where nine were confirmed dead. The bodies were then transferred to City Mortuary Mulago.
Freedom City hall has now been cordoned off, and the event scheduled for 1st of Jan 2023 halted and event organizers have been ordered to refund the money (UGX 10,000) to those who had paid to attend.
