Shock filled the hearts of Nyakach residents in Kisumu county, after finding a six-year-old boy’s body hanging on a rope in a pit latrine.
The boy who allegedly commited suicide has been identified as Sandas Odondi, a nursery school pupil at Onego Nursery School.
Cause of the suicide
Residents claim that the deceased was helping his grandmother carry soil to plaster their mud house. According to Odondi’s granny, he started complaining that it was too much work and wasn’t interested since it wasn’t his house, anyway.
After minutes of disappearing from work, she felt something was wrong. This when the grandmother started of searching for him.
“I was shocked when I went looking for him to have his lunch, only to find his lifeless body dangling from the pit latrine’s roof….. He was upset and told me that one day he would build his own house. I was shocked when I went to the toilet and found his body.” – The sorrowful grandmother narrated.
Confirming the incident, area chief Tobias Polo said that they were shocked and investigations are underway.
“It is sad and puzzling on how such a young boy could commit suicide. Police are investigating the matter and I urge residents to stop speculating,” he said.
By the time we went to print, Odondi’s body was still at St Jane Nyadero Nursing Home awaiting post-mortem.
