It’s been a fruitful evening for both SC Vipers and Express FC as the 2017/18 Azam Uganda Premier League came to an end. The latter narrowly surviving last day relegation while the former clinching on the League championship for the first time since they changed their name from Bunamwaya FC to SC Vipers.
SC Vipers Vs UPDF FC
UPDF FC that came at St Mary’s stadium with hopes of surviving the relegation had a disappointing evening after being walloped by the title-thirsty Venoms by 4 – 1.
The Visitors were the first on the score sheet through Janjali’s well taken free kick in the 24th minute of the game that safely passed by the fully stretched hands of Viper Goal Keeper Watenga to see the back of the net. However, after a few minutes, they conceded a red card that gave the hosts a motivation to make endless pressing till they leveled the game through Yayo Lutimba in the added time of the first half for the game to go into a break when it is in a 1 – 1 draw.
Vipers continued with the intense attacking in the return of the second half looking for the winning goal to secure their title hopes. By this time, their top contenders, KCCA FC that needed a win and either a draw or loss to Vipers for them to defend the title were being led by the cops, Police FC with 2 – 1.
The Kitende boys later scored in the 64th minute through Sekisambu, 80th minute through top scorer Sserunkuma and Pius Wangi in the Injury time to declare a massive victory at home that awarded them the championship plus a direct qualification to the CAF Champions League qualification rounds and buried their opponents deep into the relegation.
At Namboole Stadium, KCCA later leveled the game to secure only a point away from home and to deny them a chance of defending the League championship.
Masavu FC Vs Express FC
This was a do or die game for the Red Eagles as they had to secure maximum points while hoping for two of either UPDF, Soana or Proline losing their respective games and it happened so.
As the relegated Masavu FC was still holding Express FC by 0 – 0, Proline got a lead to URA FC at Lugogo while Soana versus Maroons was also still 0 – 0 and UPDF leading Vipers by 1 – 0. This was an assurance that Proline and Soana would stay in the League and the Red Eagles relegated.
In the later minutes of game play, Express got a lead through Aleku but still stayed in the relegation and only remained with hopes of URA FC, Maroons or Vipers leading their opponents.
URA leveled Proline to send them into relegation and Vipers did so to UPDF to bring Express out of Relagation but was still threatened of either Proline or UPDF’s lead again. As the games continued, Express FC ket their 1 – 0 lead for the rest of the game as Vipers beat UPDF 4 – 1 and URA led 2 – 1 to confirm that the two losing teams had to join Masavu in the relegation.
That is how they Survived on the last day.
