Joshua Cheptegei wins a Gold Medal in 2018 Commonwealth Games

Long distance runner, Joshua Cheptegei has brought back happiness to Ugandans after winning a gold medal in the on-going Common Wealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia today morning.

The 21-year old bagged the first Uganda’s medal in this year’s competition after winning the men’s 5000m final with a time of 13:50.83 minutes at the Carrara Stadium.

Cheptgei was followed by Canada’s Mohammed Ahmed, who finished with 13:52.78 to take second place and the silver medal and the Kenyan teenager Edward Zakayo who got the bronze with a time of 13:54.06.

He was also with other Ugandans including Thomas Ayeko who finished fourth with 13:54.78 and Phillip Kipyeko who finished sixth.

Most of the athletics fans in Uganda will never forget him when he collapsed while leading the last lap of the men’s 5000m race at Kololo Airstrip during the IAAF World Cross Country championship in Kampala to finish 30th.

He also won a silver medal at the 2017 World Championships after finishing second.
