The men side Rugby Cranes started their annual Elgon Cup campaign on a high note with defeating rivals Kenya in the first leg that happened in Kisumu.
Uganda stunned Kenya with a 16 – 13 final score to break the 6 year away jinx in the competition as they had last beat Kenya way back in 2013.
The outstanding efforts of Adrian Kasito gave the Ugandan side a lead with a try before Aaron Ofoywroth aded a drop goal and a penalty to stretch the Nile Special sponsored side a 11 – 0 lead.
The hosts tried to fight back with eforts of Dominic Coulson’s successful penalty conversion reducing the deficit by 3 points by break time. However on return, Santos Ssenteza added another try to stretch the visitor’s lead to 16 – 3. The Kenyans tried to fight back, managing two tries but they were not enough to stop the Rugby cranes from celebrating victory.
According to the Coach Robert Sseguya, the boys gave their best, outing their bodies on line for their nation to register not only an important win, but also a motivation to all other Rugby players out there.
“Just like 2013, I put all my trust in the boys and indeed, they gave their best… I’m proud of them. We are going to rectify a few mistakes as we wait for the second leg” Coach Sseguya said.
Aaron Ofoywroth who features for Kenyan side Harlequins was voted man of the match.
Meanwhile from the women category, Kenya outwitted the Ugandan girls by 37 – 3.
