One of the top programs by the government of Uganda is the issuing of national identity cards to all school ongoing children between the ages of 5 to 16 years and has slated a period of 3 months for this massive registration from 29th May to the 29th of August 2017 in all Private and government aided schools in Uganda.
This was recently launched at the Oxford Inn in Mbarara, where the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) was given full responsibility of the exercise where a total of 10,800,000 heads are expected to be registered.
One of the objectives of this program is reducing on the number of ghost learners in schools from which the government has been losing up to UGX 2 billion in terms of capitation grants, school facility grants and teachers’ salaries.
